Problems of Seal Failure

Seal failure is a common daily occurrence across all industry. When a seal fails and needs to be replaced, can a better seal be found which will last longer, not succumb to temperature changes, nor corrode like the last one?

In order to answer this question, the permutations of the equipment in use, the size of the seal, the materials needed to withstand the extreme temperatures generated by the processes and the possible corrosive nature of the fluids all need to be considered.

Taking into account the different equipment requiring seals, the temperatures and pressures under which they operate and the range of fluids they contain, it is not unreasonable to estimate that there are probably a billion different sealing permutations. This can prove to be a nightmare for any maintenance team.

Database Solutions for Seal Management
A central database for application solutions has been developed by AESSEAL®.
Our computer software suite is designed to solve any mechanical seal application problem at the touch of a few keys.

The AESSEAL® Environmental Software Suite, developed in-house over the last decade by our own software engineers, enables our clients to manage their on-site seal programme. Available on CD Rom or over the internet, this software is thought to be the most comprehensive seal management tool in the industry today.

It works from an extensive database, which covers all possible permutations and applies the combined knowledge and expertise of AESSEAL® engineers, distributors and customers alike to compile decades of practical experience into an easily accessible and user-friendly programme.

1. Seal Selection by Chemical Type
At the heart of the system is a chemical database which specifies the appropriate metallurgies, elastomers and seal face materials for seals to handle 2600 fluids at different temperatures and concentrations. Details of hazard warnings, physical characteristics and special handling considerations can be found in a special memo section.

2. Seal Selection by Equipment Type
A comprehensive equipment database delivers information on over 4000 models of pumps, mixers, compressors and peripheral rotating equipment. By inputting their data, users can rapidly determine which standard seals dimensionally fit or whether a special seal design is required.

3. Heat Generation & System Selection
Maintaining a stable fluid film is critical to seal performance. A heat generation programme automatically calculates the heat generated by the seal and specifies AESSEAL® support systems to match the specific application parameters and requirements for cooling.

4. Site Seal Survey
The Site Seal Survey is probably the most important tool of the software suite. It monitors the performance of installed seals and records the on-site history whilst providing valuable information including Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) through concise reports. These can be presented in graph format to show likely life span and future failure predictions.

Information on every pump, seal in use, chemical or other fluid used, speed and flow, pressure and temperature, can all be monitored, with any recurring seal failures identified on a bad-actors report.

Through monitoring, the need to replace seals rather than wait until they actually fail can be anticipated. This cuts downtime even further and reduces downtime costs to improve overall plant performance.

Customers looking for an answer to their seal problems can access over 1000 case histories which demonstrate years of success in providing solutions for difficult and diverse applications. The details of seal designs which have been specially created are also available.

The Software Suite is available on a multimedia CD-ROM. To request your copy please call AESSEAL® on +44 (0) 1709 369966 or email:marketing@aesseal.com. You will be sent a copy of the CD with a license and password lasting 1 year only. Any renewals should be requested once the license expires.

The Software Suite is available on this website under the applications section. Unless already registered you
will be asked to fill in a password request form. This will be processed and you will be sent a password to log on in the same place under applications. From here on follow the screen instructions.
